Standard heavy-duty roll forming machines are mainly engineered for thick structural metal sheets, with the conventional processing thickness ranging from 2.0 mm to 6.0 mm for carbon steel and galvanized steel, while customized ultra-heavy structural models can reach up to 8–12 mm for special heavy profiles. The applicable thickness varies by machine configuration, raw material tensile strength and finished profile purposes.
For regular heavy-duty equipment producing highway guardrail, heavy C/Z purlin and large-size solar PV support, the mainstream working range is 2.0mm–4.0mm, the most widely adopted specification for construction steel structure factories. These machines adopt thickened welded machine base, oversized solid roller shafts and high-power main drive motors to bear large forming pressure, steadily processing Q235, SGCC galvanized steel with yield strength below 450MPa.
Ultra-heavy customized roll forming lines for bridge auxiliary components, warehouse rack uprights and thick wall U-channel expand the upper limit to 4–6mm; extra reinforced industrial customized units can handle raw material up to 8–12mm hot rolled steel for special engineering profiles. Meanwhile, thickness limit shrinks for high-strength alloy steel and stainless steel: stainless steel heavy-duty formers normally cap at 3.0mm, and HSLA high-tensile steel is restricted within 4.5mm to avoid material cracking during continuous cold bending.
In contrast to light-gauge roll formers working below 1.2mm for roofing panels, heavy-duty equipment sacrifices running speed (5–30m/min) to guarantee dimensional precision when forming thick blanks. Clients can adjust roller clearance and hydraulic pressure to adapt slight thickness fluctuation within the designed scope.
